What robot mopping actually does
Excellent at maintenance. Poor at anything dried on.
Nearly every robot vacuum now mops, and expectations are the main source of disappointment. Robot mopping handles light everyday dust and footprints well. It does not handle a dried-on spill, and no current model replaces a proper mop for a kitchen floor after cooking.
The three mop types
| Type | How it works | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Flat pad, dragged | Damp cloth pulled behind the unit | Mostly redistributes water. Fine for dust, useless on marks |
| Vibrating pad | Pad oscillates rapidly against the floor | Meaningfully better on light marks |
| Spinning discs / roller | Powered rotation with downward pressure | Actually scrubs. The only type that removes anything stuck |
If mopping matters to you, this distinction is worth more than any suction figure. A high-Pa machine with a dragged flat pad mops worse than a modest machine with spinning discs.
The smell problem
A damp mop pad sitting in a dock develops a smell within days. This is the actual reason hot-water washing and mop drying exist on flagship models, and it is a real quality-of-life difference rather than a marketing feature.
If your model does not have it, the workaround is removing and drying the pad after every run — which is exactly the manual step you bought a robot to avoid.
Water capacity and coverage
Onboard water tanks are small, and mopping coverage per fill is often much less than the vacuuming range. On a larger floor you will be refilling mid-run unless the dock has a clean water reservoir that refills automatically.
That auto-refill capability, not the tank size, is what determines whether mopping is genuinely hands-off on a large floor.
Carpet and mop lifting
If you have any carpet, the machine must lift the pad clear of it. Lift heights vary from a few millimetres to a few centimetres. A model that lifts 5mm clears a thin rug and will still drag damp cloth across medium pile.
What to use in the tank
Plain water, or a cleaning solution the manufacturer specifically approves. Ordinary floor cleaner foams, and foam damages pumps. This voids warranties routinely and is one of the more common self-inflicted failures.
If mopping matters, look for spinning or roller pads with downward pressure rather than a dragged flat cloth. See mopping models → Advertising — we may earn a commission.
Common questions
Do robot mops actually clean floors?
They handle light everyday dust and footprints well. They do not remove dried-on spills, and no current model replaces a proper mop for a kitchen floor after cooking.
What is the difference between mop types?
A flat dragged pad mostly redistributes water. A vibrating pad is meaningfully better on light marks. Spinning discs or rollers with downward pressure are the only type that genuinely scrubs.
Can I put floor cleaner in a robot mop tank?
Only a solution the manufacturer approves. Ordinary floor cleaner foams, and foam damages the pump. This is a common self-inflicted failure and usually voids the warranty.
