Pet hair is the hardest thing a robot vacuum does, and the spec that solves it is not the one being advertised. Long hair wraps around a spinning brush until the roller stops turning — no amount of suction prevents that.

Priority order for pet homes

  2. AI obstacle avoidance — so it drives around accidents rather than through them
  3. Sealed HEPA filtration — matters if anyone in the house has allergies

Why brush design beats suction

Suction pulls hair into the machine. It does nothing about what happens next. Traditional bristle brushes catch long hair between the bristles, where it winds tighter with every rotation until the roller seizes. At that point the vacuum is still running, still making noise, and picking up almost nothing.

Anti-tangle designs solve it mechanically. Rubber or silicone fins have no bristles for hair to wind around. Dual counter-rotating brushes split the hair between two rollers rather than letting it accumulate on one. Some include a fixed comb that trims hair as the roller turns, cutting anything long enough to wrap.

On a spec sheet, look for: tangle-free, anti-wrap, dual brush, rubber roller, or a named cutting system. If a listing shows a traditional bristle roller and you own a long-haired animal, you will be cutting hair off it regularly.

The obstacle avoidance problem

Anyone who has read a robot vacuum horror story knows the scenario. A machine without object recognition treats pet mess as an ordinary obstacle, drives through it and distributes it across every floor of the house before you get home.

AI vision models trained to recognise pet waste avoid it entirely, and some send a photo alert instead. If you have a puppy, a senior dog, or an animal with digestive issues, this feature alone justifies moving up a tier.

Filtration and allergies

Pet allergens are proteins carried on dander — skin flakes far smaller than hair. A vacuum that captures hair but exhausts fine particles back into the room can make symptoms worse rather than better.

What matters is a sealed system, not just a HEPA-rated filter. A HEPA filter in a leaky housing lets air bypass it entirely. Look for wording about sealed filtration or a stated particle capture rate. Self-emptying docks with sealed bags help too, since emptying a bin by hand is when most allergen exposure happens.

Practical setup

Introduce it to nervous animals gradually

Leave the robot switched off in the room for a few days so it becomes ordinary furniture. Run it briefly while you are present and feeding treats before scheduling it unattended. Cats in particular can find a moving machine genuinely stressful, and a bad first encounter is hard to undo.
