LiDAR vs camera navigation

The spec that decides whether it cleans your home or bumps around it.

Navigation determines whether a robot vacuum cleans your home methodically or bumps around missing half of it. It is the single largest difference between models, and the one least visible in a spec comparison.

The three systems

  • Random / bump sensors — no map at all. Bounces off walls, misses areas, takes far longer. Only found on the cheapest units.
  • LiDAR — a spinning laser maps the room in minutes and cleans in straight parallel lines. Works in complete darkness.
  • Camera / AI vision — recognises what objects are, so it avoids cables, socks and pet mess rather than driving into them.

How LiDAR works

A small turret spins, firing thousands of laser pulses per second and measuring how long each takes to return. The result is a millimetre-accurate floor plan built in real time. Because it measures distance rather than interpreting images, it works identically in a pitch-dark room and a sunlit one.

What it gives you in practice: precise maps you can edit, room-by-room cleaning, virtual no-go zones, and efficient straight-line paths instead of random loops. This is the current baseline — if a listing does not mention mapping, that is a reason to move on.

The turret problem

The spinning laser sits on top, adding two to three centimetres to overall height. That is frequently the exact amount that decides whether the machine fits under a sofa, bed or kitchen unit. Retractable-LiDAR designs raise the turret to scan, then lower it to clean in tight spaces — the main reason to consider them.

How camera-based systems work

RGB or 3D cameras, usually combined with structured light, identify what an object is rather than just detecting that something is there. A good system distinguishes a sock from a pet toy from a charging cable and reacts appropriately.

The practical benefit is that you stop tidying the floor before each run. A LiDAR-only machine sees a cable as an obstacle of a certain shape and may still drive into it; a vision system recognises it as a cable and gives it a wide berth.

The trade-offs

Cameras need some light, so pure vision systems can struggle in a dark room, though most now include infrared. Some people are uncomfortable with a camera-equipped device mapping their home — worth checking the manufacturer's data policy if that matters to you. Vision systems are also more expensive.

That last one matters more than it sounds in any home above about 90 square metres, where a single charge often will not finish the job.

Is LiDAR better than camera navigation?

They solve different problems. LiDAR maps accurately and works in the dark; camera-based AI vision recognises objects and avoids cables and pet mess. The best current systems combine both.
