Carpet homes need a different machine
Two neighbours, same vacuum, opposite verdicts. The floors explain all of it.
Two neighbours buy the same robot vacuum on the same offer. One is delighted. The other returns it within a month. The difference is not the machine — it is that one house has oak floors and the other has wool carpet throughout.
Why carpet is a different problem
On a hard floor, debris sits on the surface. Airflow lifts it and it is gone in one pass. On carpet, debris works down between fibres, where suction alone cannot reach it. What actually extracts it is brush agitation — the roller physically beating the pile and loosening what is embedded before the airflow removes it.
This is why a machine that scores brilliantly on hard floors can look useless on carpet despite an impressive Pa figure.
What a carpet home needs
- Carpet boost or auto power detection — raises suction automatically on pile rather than running at one level everywhere
- A genuinely stiff brush roller — soft rubber fins are excellent for hair on hard floors and weaker at deep agitation
- Higher suction band — this is the one case where the big numbers matter
- Mop lifting — if the machine also mops, it must raise the pad clear of carpet, or it drags damp cloth across your rug
Pile depth changes everything

That last row is the one people discover too late. Deep shag pile is the one flooring where the honest answer may be that a robot vacuum is the wrong tool. Some models refuse to climb onto it, others climb on and beach themselves. If you have a thick shag rug, the practical solution is a no-go zone around it and an upright vacuum for that area.

Combination vacuum-mop units are the default now, and on a carpeted floor the mop is a liability unless the machine lifts it. Lifting heights vary considerably — some raise the pad only a few millimetres, which clears a thin rug but not a medium carpet.
If you have carpet and want mopping, check the stated mop lift height against your pile depth. This specification is buried in the manual and almost never in the marketing.
Transitions and thresholds
The edge where hard floor meets a rug is where robots get stuck. A machine with low threshold climbing will nudge a rug edge repeatedly, bunch it up, and eventually stop with an error. Rug grippers or a heavier-backed rug solve this more cheaply than a better vacuum.

Do robot vacuums work on carpet?
Yes, though performance depends heavily on pile depth. Low-pile carpet is handled easily by mid-range models. Medium pile benefits from carpet boost and higher suction. High-pile shag is genuinely difficult for most robots regardless of price.
