The most common reason a robot vacuum ends up in a cupboard is not poor cleaning. It is that the owner got tired of rescuing it.

The dark floor problem

Worth explaining because it confuses people. Cliff sensors work by bouncing infrared light off the floor and measuring the return. A very dark rug or black tile absorbs that light, and the machine reads the absence of a return as a staircase — so it refuses to cross.

First try cleaning the sensors. If the behaviour persists on a specific rug, some models offer a carpet or dark-floor setting. If not, a no-go zone around that area is the practical answer.

When the machine is the problem

If it gets stuck repeatedly in an open room with nothing obviously in the way, the issue is navigation rather than obstacles. Machines with bump sensors and no mapping do this by design — they have no memory of the room and no plan. That is not fixable with tidying, and it is the strongest argument for insisting on LiDAR mapping at any price point.

The one that actually matters

A machine that gets stuck once a week is annoying. A machine that gets stuck once a run stops being used. When you are comparing models, obstacle avoidance is worth more than an extra 10,000 Pa, because it determines whether the thing runs at all.
