Two people buy the same well-reviewed stick vacuum. One finds it effortless. The other has shoulder ache after twenty minutes. They are 1.85m and 1.55m tall respectively, and no product page mentions this.

The rule that governs comfort

Your elbow should sit at roughly 90 degrees while the head is flat on the floor, and your wrist should stay straight. If you are reaching down or lifting your shoulder to compensate, the machine is the wrong length for you — regardless of how good it is.

Why height is invisible in reviews

Reviewers rarely state their own height, so "comfortable to use" is an unqualified claim. A machine described as light and manoeuvrable by a tall reviewer can feel top-heavy to a shorter user, because the same weight is now further from their centre of gravity and held at an awkward angle.

Weight-in-hand beats total weight

A 6kg canister vacuum can be far less tiring than a 3kg stick vacuum, because the canister's weight rolls on the floor while the stick's weight sits in your hand at the end of a lever.

The specification that matters is where the motor is. Motor at the handle means weight-in-hand. Motor at the floor head or in a separate body means the weight is carried by the floor, not your arm.

The swivel test

A head that pivots smoothly lets the machine change direction without your wrist doing the work. A stiff or notchy swivel transfers every turn into your forearm — and into the neck joint, which is where machines break.

In a shop, push the head left and right through its full range. It should move with fingertip pressure. If you have to use your whole arm, that resistance is going somewhere every time you clean.

Backpack vacuums

Rarely considered domestically, and worth knowing about if you clean large areas or have joint problems. A properly fitted backpack puts most of the weight on your hips, where leg muscles carry it, leaving only a lightweight wand in your hand. Ergonomics specialists recommend them over uprights specifically because uprights load one arm and shoulder asymmetrically.

They look unusual in a home. They are also considerably easier on the body over long sessions.
