Are robot mowers worth it?
They change lawn care more than robot vacuums change cleaning — with more caveats.
Robot mowers work on a different principle to normal mowing. Instead of cutting a lot occasionally, they cut a tiny amount constantly — often daily. The clippings are small enough to fall between the blades and decompose, which fertilises the lawn and means no collection.
The result, after a few weeks, is a lawn that looks consistently maintained rather than alternating between shaggy and freshly cut.

Every model states a maximum gradient, and exceeding it does not mean poor performance — it means the machine cannot climb and will fail there. Slopes are also where wheels slip on wet grass, so a model rated exactly at your gradient will struggle in practice. Choose one rated above your steepest section.

Blades and living things
Modern mowers have lift and tilt sensors that stop the blades, and the blades themselves are usually small pivoting razors rather than a large fixed blade. They are still blades. Keep children and pets off the lawn while it runs, and schedule it for times when the garden is empty.
Hedgehogs and other small wildlife are a genuine concern with night-time running. Scheduling for daylight hours substantially reduces the risk, and is the single easiest mitigation.
When a normal mower is better
- Very small lawns — the setup effort exceeds the time saved
- Heavily sloped or terraced gardens
- Gardens with many separate zones and no connecting path
- If you want stripes — robot mowers do not produce them
- Long grass — they maintain a lawn rather than rescuing one. Cut it conventionally first
